Social and Emotional Development

We believe...

...that academic success is inextricably tied to building social-emotional competencies. teaching and modeling CARES: Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self Control.

...that positive role models maximize the chances for children to grow up with good consciences and well-developed moral reasoning skills.

How does AJA do this?

  • Every child is noticed and greeted everyday.
  • Every day begins with a Morning Meeting, building a strong sense of community, and setting children up for success socially and academically.
  • Every middle school student is assigned a Kesher advisor who helps nurture and guide students and parents through the middle school years. A Kesher period begins with a "CPR", Circle of Power and Respect.
  • AJA is a place where the Habits of Mind are taught, practiced, valued and where middot tovot (good character traits) are infused into the culture.
  • Service Learning opportunities inspire our students to be helpers within our community and outside in the world.
  • We teach and practice Mindfulness.
  • Children and families are embraced for who they are and who they are striving to become at our school.

AJA Lower School Counseling

The AJA counseling department, led by Sylvia Miller, works with students, parents, and faculty to build a school-wide climate and culture that encourages personal and spiritual growth, academic success, while fostering kindness, respect and diversity. Classes, interventions and programs promote the development of self awareness, interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, and healthy boundaries. These skill sets assist our students in creating more effective work habits and a positive approach to learning. When necessary, the counselor will recommend outside support and resources such as individual therapy, social skills training, and support groups.
